Event Design Thinking for Association Events. A workshop hosted by The Oysters in London 7 December 2017.

Association executives were shown how a story-board approach to meeting design can help organisations create successful events that change behaviour and get results.

They were attending a strategic educational session: Redefining your Strategic Approach: Design Thinking for Association Events, at the M by Montcalm in London’s Tech City.

The event was hosted by The Oysters  – a group of UK-based international convention bureaux, who offer connections, knowledge and experience of their regions, to help associations.

Reprising last year’s event, Ruud Janssen, author of the Event Design Handbook, was invited back with co-author Roel Frissen, to deliver four hours of certified training to senior executives.

The creators of the #EventCanvas believe that by empathising with the stakeholders, event owners can create more valuable events where delegates act upon what they have learned.

Moreover, that it is possible, using a set of visual tools, to design an event in a systematic method, and then to be able to articulate the value of any given event in 60 seconds.

Amongst the 25 attendees were representatives from Alzheimer’s Disease International, the International Amateur Theatre Association, European Fishing Tackle Trade Association, International Swaps and Derivatives Association, International Spinal Cord Society, the World Association of Nuclear Operators and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.

Jane Cziborra, conference manager at Alzheimer’s Disease International, said: “It was a wonderful opportunity to learn how to look at your own events from a different perspective and to take the time to consider what all stakeholders want from an event.  This has motivated me to assess how we deliver our conferences to give as many stakeholders as possible the event of the year.”
